The aim of the testing is both to monitor manufacturing or operational faults (e.g. wear), and to detect otherwise not visible defects or to investigate possible causes of a more complex fault or serial damage.

Mobile Ultrasonic Testing on Wheel-Set Axles with Longitudinal Drill

The testing of wheel-set axles is often still done by hand. Only experienced inspectors are in a position to reliably detect all defects before it’s too late. This is also only possible if testing can be carried out without any disruption from parallel work, because the inspector must have a constantly high level of concentration throughout the entire test duration. Manual inspection methods often hide risks with regard to the systematic standardization of defect detection and reliable traceability.

In conjunction with AREVA, HEROS provides a mobile service to test wheel-set axles. A mobile semi-automated test facility is brought to the vehicle and this test facility tests a wheel-set in about 20 minutes. The data from the testing is recorded, thus enabling a reliable analysis which can be retrieved at any time. This enables a reliable analysis and can be done online or offline. Traceability is guaranteed and the inspection documentation is generated automatically.

This service is of great benefit to small and medium-sized operators especially, because they don’t need to invest in purchasing testing systems and they don’t have to initially and regularly train their own inspectors. Also, the large number of available inspectors at AREVA and the spare parts on hand for the testing systems guarantee maximum reliability in keeping to inspection dates.

  • Very precise, very high-quality testing
  • Testing is carried out by a certified inspector
  • Outstanding traceability and comparability
  • Considerably shorter downtimes of vehicles due to quick testing and the ability to carry out many other types of work at the same time as the testing on the vehicle.
  • Inspection plans and driving programmes are drawn up by AREVA based on the individual design of the wheel-set axle and validated by the NDT competence centre.
  • As an NDT test centre, AREVA accepts responsibility for testing and undertakes to prepare reports in accordance with DIN 27201-7.
  • As a general rule, coating damage can immediately be distinguished from relevant damage during testing.
  • Testing takes place from one side of the vehicle only and therefore disrupts any other work being undertaken on the vehicle at the same time far less than manual inspections.

The mobile testing service is offered as a regular service as part of a general agreement or at short notice in cases of urgent need.
